this isnt going to be a second DD... its going to be my main car... im trading the 02 explorer in. but i did drive one this saturday and it was a very pleasent surprise how it performed, especially since the dealer wasnt with me.

Depends on what you want the car for.
Colbalts seem to be priced a little to high for what you get. Mazdaspeeds surprised the hell out of me at VIR and put laps on a modded SRT-4 and gave me quite a challenge even in stock form, excpet for brake pads. So they handle very well stock but you cant really do too much to the motor since it's not built for turbo.
So, if straight line is more your thing then SRT-4 of course would be the way to go, and they probably would even out handle a Cobalt stock for stock.
