wtf are GIS classes?

FYA, Associates Degree, 5 years + working for Northrop Grumman as a Designer/Draftsman/SometimesDoingEngineersWork = no pay raise and 35k salary. Engineering degree will get ya in the mid to low 40's in yearly salary from what i see in the CADD industry around here.

GIS is Geographic Information Systems , like Arc-Info. The jobs market has more openings if you have GIS experience or training.

VA is too poor unless you spend 4+ years of upper college education, and then you'll only make 5-10k more per year and hardly offset the higher education cost.

i mean who hires Civil engineers here mostly, VDOT?, and the state has chopped them up to a pulp almost this year and cut alot of positions to save. All i gotta say is Good Luck OP. Walmart maybe your best bet, seriously.

truth. not a whole lot of contruction either private or public going on. Maybe OP can search for a real estate group/ interior and exterior design shops for small work.
