Get her a decent DSLR basics book. (tons of them in Barnes & Noble). Tons of tutorials on youtube as well.
And tell her to join vaphotogs.com
Local forum with people who can provide feedback and help out.
The only thing you will be paying for is the book. Everything else is 'free'.

I never said you can't learn from a class. I've taken several through HS and College. All I did was give a cheaper suggestion, and you flat out say no like it's not an option. I've learned as much from reading a few good books as I did from the classes.

which led me to believe that you're completely opposed to classes. personally, i've never taken any classes...i've read books, and i've shot and shot and shot. sure, it's a valid way to learn, but you don't learn everything.

I have taken a couple of the classes that TCC has to offer out of there VAC in old towne Portsmouth. I will say that the 101 class can be kind of difficult if you dont already know the your functions of your camera. There were some people that just couldn't get it.

I took the 101 and darkroom classes to get to the studio classes and thats where I started to learn.

They sometimes hold classes in norfolk. It's the best bang for buck.
