IMO:

Basically as far as the college thing goes, you do not have to have gone to suceed. Any business owner who hires only because one went to college is an idiot and most likely anyone with any common sense wouldn't enjoy working for such a person. Unfortunantly, there are many idiots out there who do it. So that dream job you may think you want might require a degree.

Why are there so many college grads that can't seem to keep a job? One reason is because book smarts only get you so far in the real world before common sense and experience are needed. And if you have a job requiring only book smarts to do then you probably have a job that makes you feel like a robot. And you payed for college to do it. I think I would feel like an idiot if that were my case.

Ask yourself what's your idea of suceeding in life? Is it making a huge amount of money (i feel sorry for you if so) or is it doing the best you can and enjoying the ride?

My $.02

I barely graduated high school because I hardly went, no college, one shitty computer cert (A+), and I have an excellent "career". I was a project manager by the time I was 23 and my company pays to send me to to all kinds of training and will be paying for my degree when/if I ever decide to get one.

I hardly do any real work, rarely put in "a 8 hour day" and I travel a lot, first class, all over the world. I'm currently in San Diego sitting by the pool, having a few beers, working on my sunburn. All while on the clock for another three hours.

My larger/known companies will gladly pay for your schooling once you start working there if you really want to get a degree. Looking back on everything, I would be making a little more money that I am now if I had a degree, but I wouldn't be in that position if I would have wasted four years in college right out of high school.

Despite the fact that this thread was bumped after almost a year, I'd like to say that college is not required for success. I'm living proof of that. I don't talk about how much I make per year because that's not anyone's business, but I do well, and I get to do work that I whole-heartedly enjoy whilst traveling the world.

I probably should do it. I talked at length with one of the detectives who trained the Norfolk police academy when I was working at pep boys, and he said pretty much the main thing people fail for is shooting and the wrestling portion. I can shoot pretty good, and I'm big enough to hold my own in wrestling, and I used to be an offensive lineman.
What about what people fail before even getting in? Drug test? Polygraph? Background Investigation? etc.

To be honest, I've heard nothing but bad stuff about the one in Newport News, and this is by people who work there and people who work at the Norfolk Naval shipyard.

But right now I'm really up for just about anything.
Who cares about the bad stuff? If you get a federal position, you're set. Great benefits with mediocre pay. What more can you ask? And isn't it like $35k starting?

Its not that I couldnt cut it at TCC, its that I got bored with it and didnt want to cut it. I didnt "drop out" because it was too hard, I stopped going becuase I wasnt doing anything I wanted to do.

Oh, and I will be starting at NNSY in July, so I dont need any more advise from anyone. Seems like someone doesnt think that I "cant commit" or whatever you have in your brain.
Good for you. At least you aren't one of those people that have a degree and still makes threads like these.

People don't know how good they got it having a degree versus not having one.
