The Merkur XR4Ti was a watered down version of the Euro-spec Ford Escort.
The Escort was powered by the DOHC 16 valve turbo 4 cylinder with displacement ranging from 1.8 to 2.2 liters, RWD or AWD.
The XR4Ti was powered by the Ford 2.3 liter SOHC 8 valve 4 cylinder with turbo. And in South Africa it was offered with that awful 4.2 liter V-8. The biggest limiting factor for the XR4Ti was that they had the crappy T3 automatic or T10 5 speed. Neither of which could handle much power. Luckly the bell housings of the better transmissions like the T-5 and C4s will bolt right up to the 2.3 with no problems.

C3 and T9* - but if you ask many of the merkur owners with a t-9 they will tell you you can put a few hundred pony's through them if you keep "Merkur Synthetic Oil" in it, and you dont miss gears or make the mistake of goin from 3rd to 2nd in a race... other than that I dont think I have ever heard of just a t-9 taking a dump...
But yes, we have the SOHC 8v, which is a EASY engine to mod, cheap and fast as hell.. but some opt for a DOHC cossy engine which is nice too.. but a little pricey
I dont even know why I try to argue for the car, no one is ever goin to understand its ability's... many people dont even knmow what it is.. they just see merkur and its ugly looks and think pos.. but whatever.. let them..
