You should also do some Googling on the Haldex AWD system. That one has been used in some VW's as well as a few other cars. I believe the Mazdaspeed 6 AWD system is from Haldex as well.

I know there is a good video on youtube that was for mitsubishi service techs explaining the DSM AWD system which is pretty basic.

im sure someone will chime in if im not 100% accurate, on reliability, BUT AUDI was the first and have been doing great since, soooo, i would look at their setups.....
