The information that is available, however, emphatically says that the Corvette SS is not Blue Devil. GM is adamant that the latter project is dead. Corvette SS, however, looks to be a real project currently in a pre-production state of development. Requests for quotes have gone out to GM's vendors for the parts necessary to build it. On another forum, a redacted copy of one of those quote requests has been posted, along with a timeline for delivery that points to a 2008 production date. Corvette SS is to use a supercharged version of the Cadillac developed 6.2 liter engine that will be standard in all 2008 Corvettes (and in milder tune for some 2007 SUVs).
In other words, LS2 and LS7 will be gone. All Corvettes will have the same 6.2 liter engine (coded as LS3 in the Corvette), but the Corvette SS will have a factory supercharger (changing the engine code to LS9). Reading between the lines, this means that Corvette SS will replace the current Z06.
Preliminary horsepower estimates have the LS3 at 425 hp and the LS9 at 600 hp. The 25 hp jump in the base Corvette sounds reasonable given the displacement increase, and the 95 hp jump over the current Z06 for Corvette SS sounds possible given a blower with advanced engine controls from the factory. Tuners are currently lurking around that level with blown LS2s, even though they don't have engine controls specifically designed for a blown engine. Note that these are flywheel hp numbers, as is the normal practice for factory power ratings.
