Titling Isssues In VA and NC
Well I've ran into a problem after purchasing a vehicle off a local based forum (but not the same state) I bought a 240sx and got the title and bill of sale, I recently had a house fire and all my stuff burned. Now the problem is I can not get a hold of the previous owner for him to get me a lost title.
No i did not put the vehicle in my name, just had the signed title and bill of sale. I purchased the car almost a year ago and it's been in storage.
Now I'm trying to see if anyone on here can tell me if I need to go to a salvaging company and get a title or what. There's not much info on the web about this, especially since bought in NC and is in VA now.
I've tried emailing 5 times at-least, and have PM'd and called the only numbers I have for him. He is no longer active on the forum either.
So what shall I do

best thing to do is stop by a towing company...
do not call they will tell you no!!!!!!
go there and ask a manager/owner if he would be willing to "process a vehicle for you"
the car may have to sit on his property to be processed...
its going to cost you about 150 bucks...
or you could go to dmv...and it will take you months and months

Re: Titling Isssues In VA and NC
that is how to do it in nc as well. when my father in law has an abandond car in his impound he gets titles that way. however, if the car is titled out of state it becomes more difficult (at least in nc it does)

Re: Titling Isssues In VA and NC
My ex girlfriends dad owns a towing company and i have asked about this before.
if a vehicle is in a towing company, car dealership, or mechanics possession for at least 30 days then they can file a mechanics lien on the vehicle.
30 days after he has filed for the mechanics lien he can file for a salvage title and sign it over into your name.
i know this for a fact but as previously stated this will cost you.

in va dmw requests that all towing company apply for title within 3 days of towing the vehicle...
and all automtive shops have signs that say storage after 3 days or so...
so if the owner doesnt pay within 3-4 days then you process it....the hell with waiting 30 days..
