id say toyota all the way and theres actually a 88 toyota pickup with a 1uz (sc400 motor) in it that seems like it would be a fun truck on craigslist at the moment...mine just sold or id tell you to buy mine

If you plan on towing anything, a 22RE Toyota is not for you. Like Flite said the 3.4 V6 Tacoma is what you want. Steer clear of the 3.0 V6 found in the earlier trucks. They can have head gasket problems.
