I'll take a coupe or sedan instead.

what automaker would they be up against? The only other V-8 convert I can think of is a mustang GT?

M5s didn't have v8s during this time period, they had 315hp inline-6s. The v8 came in the next generation m5.

But closest competition would have come from Mercedes.
