it's not that he did something stupid and randomly died. he did something stupid and had to pay the consequences, this time with his own life. what the person is trying to say is that he took the risk and ended up with the consequences.
it was not a tragedy because it was not a random loss.
yeah, sucks that the dude died, but he did it to himself (and thankfully did not kill his passenger).
