It was recommended to me by someone on another forum. His reasoning being: if you're in there, why not. Can't hurt. Since this is an old motor - I just want to take all available precautions (speaking of which, i need to go have another look at my cam bearings).

Thanks for the order sequencing on the install. Will refer back to it when i dig in tonight.

they usually dont wear out unless someone beat the piss out of it and did not change the oil. how nasty did the top of the head look when you pulled it apart?

not nasty at all. I realize there may not have been a point to it - but since I wasn't informed of any downside - why not?

slowly but surely making progress on this cam. getting the gear bolted to the shaft was hard since the shaft was uninstalled and I was trying to torque the gear bolts to 12-17ftlb. I have hella-grip.

Got the cam in tonight! I was having some troubles earlier with getting everything to fit, but turns out its because I had the cam gear installed on the WRONG side of the "wings" on the cam (through which the bolts run).

Finally got that figured out, which allowed the cam to fit in properly. Got the chain on the gear fairly easily and luckily I guestimated the correct alignment of the gear (check the third pic, lines parallel with top of head).

Slid the bearings on each end, and installed the first dowel to secure the bearing. THe second dowel was MUCH harder, since the camshaft prevents it from dropping down perfectly vertical into the hole. So I tried putting that one in first and putting the OTHER side in second - and that worked after I semi-forced the dowel in (a little tough love w/ some vices).

Horray. Now its all in. Have to get the cylinder head cover on next - and set the valve clearance.

What should I do after that? Feels good to have this thing progressing so quickly.

Yay!

dont forget to remove your wire out of the tentioner. install the cover, set lash, add oil, assemble rest of bike. let me know how your valve adjusting goes. people seem to get them loose the first time they do them.

I got all that except "set lash". Ran a quick google search and seem to have gotten the jist of it. Thanks for all the tips, again. What order should I proceed w/ on the rest of the install?
Carbs first?
Drivetrain first?
Does it matter?

set lash=adjust valves.

what ever order you would like. me personally, i like to work from the motor out. so exhaust, carb, intake, body work.
