^ I'd do what The_rabbit1 said, go to the local stores, cycle gear, cycle world, etc. and try the different sizes out to see what's best for you then buy them online to save some $.
Here's a couple sites you can checkout:
http://newenough.com/ (they can pretty nice deals in their closeout now and then)
http://www.bikebandit.com/
http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/
You can do ebay just make sure they have good feedback and are legit and whatnot.
For your helmet you want it to be snug without much movement but you also don't want it too tight on your head. I'm not so sure bout the smaller helmet thing, some people say that, I know it works for gloves, you definitely do break it in, but I dunno if it's as much a fit in as breaking gloves in would be. I got a big ass head myself and the XL helmet I got still fits as it did before, at least how I remember it.

NP. Good to see someone WANTING to learn everything they can the right way ie. MSF class, before getting a bike. Good luck with everything and with the class when you take it. I'm sure you'll be fine though.

def make sure helmet is snug, a loose helmet will get sucked up by the air. ask how i know...should be about the same as a fitted cap, ie large or med same for gloves and such, try whatever you'd normally buy in a work glove, jacket, hat etc. should fit just right. and
