Some of the first generations would play both PS1 and PS2 games as well. They are more rare and costly -so it seems.

backwards compatible means that it is capable of playing ps1 and ps2 games. All the first models of PS3 were backwards compatible. Then Sony took it away from the newer small models and made it only so the 80g's were backwards compatible. I guess so it was another reason to buy a 80g PS3 instead of settling for the smaller version.
