are non stock HID's legal??
Im thinking about coping some aftermarket HID's for my fresh celica, but not sure if they will pass inspection. I heard once, that only HIDs that come from the manfacture are legal. I wouldnt get those super duper 9000ks or anything, just something calm and bright. Goodlook...

as long as it is 4300K or no more than 5000K (bright white)...you might be able to pass inspection. Technically they are not legal but as long as they are lined up correctly you might pass. Also depends where you take it and who inspects it for you. Luck of the draw. My friend has a 4300K kit on and he passed with no problem here in VA.

Federal law states that only HIDs that come from the manufacturer are street legal.
They made this law I believe after a bunch of JDM/UK HIDs got imported into the country and started blinding people due to their misalignment from the factory since they were made for people driving on opposite sides of the road compared to the US. Other aftermarket HIDs were simply too bright and were blinding motorists on the road.

If you do a clean, complete retrofit, including projectors to properly distribute light, chances are ( at least i would think) nobody would notice, and you wouldn't have a problem.

I don't ever want to go back to regular halogens.

NO they are NOT D.O.T Approved.
reason being is people like to throw HID's in to a non projector housing and that well just blinds people and causes ALOT of glare with out the hid being a strait cut beam. If you retrofit your head lights or your headlights are already projector's then you really shouldnt have a issue at the inspection station. But if you show up there with a civic and have HID's with out some sort of projector chances are you will be hit with the cute lil pink sticker sayin rejected.
