Re: 17's on a honda
one more thing. the tire size does make a difference. at one point i had 215/35 on the rims and i could keep the car a little bit lower, .25 inches lower to be exact. just remember tires make a difference as well

205 40 17
205 is the width in mm
40 is 40% of that
the 17 is the rim size
off set is how far the rim sticks out from the shocks......as long as its negitive the closer the center of ther rim is to the hub....but that would be like deep dish wheels......positive offset means closer to the road.....

Re: 17's on a honda
I had a 93 civic 4d with 17x7s and the tires were 205/40's . here is a pic:
as long as the car was not to low it never rubbed. i also put the wilwood brake kit on my civic that had 4 pot calipers and a 12.19 inch rotor and the 17 inch rim helped clearance issues. i hoped this helped.

i completely forgot about this but the fenders are not flared but the little lip that is on the inside is bent all of the way up because it gave me that extra bit of clearance i needed for my rims. I was gonna flare them but after taking measurements i found that all i needed was to get rid of that little lip that holds on the fender liner. tatmonster you have a good eye because that is broken paint at the top of the fender.

Exel BK7 rims- 17x7 40 offset
Most likely, the tires on them right now are 205/40's. If that's the case, you shouldn't have any issues with the tires rubbing on the fenders at stock height.
If you do lower the vehicle, keep a little bit of negative camber so the tires won't rub on the fender lips when you hit bumps. Be sure to get the car aligned though, since you will probably need the toe adjusted.
