My old 93 was doing the same thing, exactly like you were describing, I though it was the sensor or pump...2 days later I dropped the oil pan to replace it (previous owner had an oil pan from his old boosted z6 on it) and found this, Instead of going any more on the Z6 I went ahead and ls swapped it...

Metal pieces, some almost 1/2 inch long

kind of hard to figure out what your picture is showing and how you are describing it. so you think i should dropp the oil pan and take a look inside of it and see? Sunday afternoon, i took off the oil sending unit and replaced it with a wroking one, light still on. want to avoid doing pump and that would be the last thing if i can eliminate other factors. THANKS

Sorry that pic wasnt very clear. I lost my old pictures... There was specks and slivers of metal in my oil pan, motor still ran fine and sounded normal but something ate itself up and the shavings were blocking my oil pickup...I never went into the motor to find what actually went wrong, just decided it was time to go b series

Check the wire as Fabrik8 says. If you have to, do a continuity test on the wire from the sensor to the ECU. If that happens to be fine, then borrow an ECU from someone. If it does the same thing, then your oil pump is probably done for.....
