Generally it can be that simple.. I went through scratching my head for a while trying to trace an overheating issue... after finally replacing something as simple as the cap.. it fixed the problem... Check it if you havent yet..

I think pressurizing the system is your best bet. sounds like you have air in the system since antifreeze isnt reaching the heater core. good luck
