I would use a Y8 with a OBD1 P28 (D16Z6) ECU, or a chipped/ vtec converted PM6. The Z6 and Y8 are pretty damn similar but the OBD2 ECUs are not tuneable, period. Therefore if you want to do an engine swap and are planning on going with a turbo setup down the road, aim for OBD1 or a vtec converted PM6.

Who said anything about a mini-me swap? Take the Y8 engine, minus tranny, and mate it to a A6 tranny. A mini-me swap is just a head swap.. SOHC vtec swaps are pretty cheap, I don't know about Y8s but Z6s are cheap and plentiful..

how hard would the 4 to 5 speed swap be? i know i can keep my 4 tranny and bolt it to a 16 but i have never heard nore read anything about a turbo 4 speed sohc vtech motor anywhere. i just want to go with whats tried and true tested.

Use fabrik8's chipped pm6 ecu, You will need to wire for mpfi, wire in vtec, and everything else should be a straight drop in. You will use your linkage and axels. Its a pretty basic swap. Use your motor mounts that are in the car now. have to run 5 wires from ecu to engine bay and drop motor in.
