as far as a stout all motor build on an h22, id go with a sleeved block (GE, AEBS, darton), some je or similar pistons, acl or kings bearings, eagle or scat rods, micropolish the crank and have it all balanced. thats a strong bottom end build imo. as for the head, aem cam gears, skunk2 stage 2 all motor cams, skunk2 valve train, and injector choice is you call as well as the CR piston you want. make sure you get a good header and an even better tune. with that build, you could have a beast turbo motor, nitrous motor, or just n/a. it will depend on the CR and cam choice. and when you are trying t get as much power as possible you can always go with a bigger bore on the sleeves and start porting and polishing.

id'd put stock jdm type s pistons w/ skunk 2 vaulves n spring& retainers and some stage 2 cams . Thats another option

Internals. Should I do any machine work to head or block

depends if your gonna bore it out or not,and regardless you need to get the blocked honed before building it.
