If you're serious... which I hope you aren't... a smooth VTEC crossover is desirable and indicative of your ECU doing what it's supposed to.

bigger cam would help.. Single cam's dont usually get much of that vtec"pop" like the dual cam b-series motors do.. If you have the money swaping in a B16 or GSR would be a good upgrade, you'd have a ton more power and upgradability with a dual cam motor..
