the ecu is used from 96-00 and make sure you have the right obd that matches your motor/wiring..! 96-98 = obd2a, and 99-00 = obd2b!!
and www.hondaswap.com helps also....but
it should say p2p on the side with all the numbers....
and im sure there is a number that means is manual, but i dont know what that is, ask fabrik8 on here and he should know!

Re: how to tell if you have a y8 5speed ecu?
that could be anything from 96 and up EX. I can't tell if it's an auto or manual tranny, I know the P2P-A11 is manual, but as far as OBD2a or b, I don't know.. You can look for a production stamp (in blue or black) with a date on the side of the ECU, and some of the ECUs are missing pins on the one plug that isn't used. OBD2a will have a blank 3rd plug, and OBD2b will have a blank 4th plug. This isn't true for all ECUs though, some have all of the plugs with pins.

For the past few days I have been doing some digging and I found on the hondata website that might be use full in this search. I think that this should be put like in a archive, so if someone has this same problem they can wont have to ask some may questions.
