It's not a "trick" so much as it's the way. OBD1 codes are a lot more straight forward as opposed to OBD2 codes, which seem to always include a vague trouble description, and can often be caused by multiple, completely different issues. If you can't figure out what went wrong with an OBD1 code, a box isn't going to help you.
