you compression must be crazy since you took .20 off the head and .10 off the block, thats .30, i know that .030 brings you up almost a full point on b series

That could also mean that the radiator core is blocked somehow, or something is blocking flow between the top and bottom hoses. It's much more likely that the thermostat is the problem, because its job is to control flow like that.

Oh, and you probably would have noticed this before, but make sure that there isn't a plug in one of the fittings. I've seen radiators and engine swaps shipped with plugs to keep debris out of the ports, so if you've just bought something like that and didn't remove a plug then that would do it too..

Block guard wouldn't make the engine overheat at idle with no load on it. Even the worst block guard designs have plenty of coolant flow for low load.

they have a 50% fail raiting, we replace brand new thermostats all the time....

and what size/kind of radiator are you using? single core, dual core, triple core?

Water boils at 212, so if you don't have a candy thermometer then you should see the thermostat open fully shortly before the water boils.

So it's overheating when it's sitting in the driveway idling, because you haven't driven it long enough to see if it happens while moving?
Just thought id point out that virtually all honda thermostats open up at 180, a lot of domestic applications run the 195. The only problem with removing the thermostat is the coolant temp sensor wont have anything regulating the water temp causing the vehilce to stay in "cold idle" which will cause it to run rich. I agree with fabrik and boil a pot of water to see if it opens up but, in your case it should start opening well before the water reaches a boil.
