I'v enever heard a CV joint "clunk" though. "Click" definitely, but not "clunk". So you did my test and saw that the motor stays put when under a load?

Yeah, I did your test and the motor didn't budge any more than it should.

Now as far as it being a clunk or a click, it could be either. I'll have to let a few friends drive the car later to see which sound they think it is.

must be a nissan thing..mine does it too and i have yet to find the problem and something rattles like crazy. i am guessin a heat shield but havent had time to look

If the "clunk" also occurs under heard braking, check all suspension components and brackets. As the car loads to the rear and vice the front this could be causing a loose component (torsion rod) to smack the piece of chassis it's mounted to momentarily. Had this problem with a prelude.
