Also, if you find a 240 hatch and try to stay away from ones that have the spoilers. 9/10 it'll have rust under the spoiler and finding one spoiler-less will save you from having to take off the spoiler and fixing the rust. Like one of the guys already mentioned before: check for rust. Frame rails, hatch/trunk, and also pop the hood and look at the shock towers too and see if there's any rust on there. Also, when you find one you like start it up and let it run for a bit while you check under the hood. One thing you want to listen for is the sound of "marbles in a tin can" coming the from of the valve cover. That sound is a sign that your upper chain guide(s) may be stuck or broken.

Yeah, you can take it off and it'll be fine, no problem. But you want to catch it ASAP because it's only plastic and it could break off and do some damage inside your motor. Atleast, that's what I've heard.
